Summary of the thesis:
This dissertation describes the concept and the development process of a traffic signal control system up to the real implementation. The control system, which was developed in the context of the Pilotprojekt Schlosskreuzung, consists of two mutually coordinated approaches for real-time traffic reconstruction and for model-predictive control of the traffic system based on the existing traffic signals. The real-time traffic reconstruction approximates the current traffic state simulation-based using given measurement data via dynamic traffic assignments.The designed multi-stage traffic signal control system uses a fuzzy system for phase preselection and subsequently employs model predictive control to solve the nonlinear problem resulting in the optimal combinations of phases and switching times. In this work, the control system is first tested purely simulatively on the basis of a selected traffic area and compared with the existing inventory method. Following the prototypical commissioning, this comparison is finalised by field tests. The corresponding results show the great potential of the development with regard to the reduction of criteria such as emissions or waiting times and at the same time the need for action for use as standard.
