Mixed Signal Design

Course No.: L.048.98032

Type: Project group

Credits: 9

Semester: WS & SS

Schedule and Location: 18.10.2024 10:00am / Room: F0.560

Short description

Design and implementation for a sensor system or communication system on PCB basis.

Content

The mixed signal design project focusses on the design and implementation for a sensor system or communication system on PCB basis. The students will work together, as group, to implement  the system from the schematic level, over PCB design to a test under laboratory conditions. Finally the system shall be tested under real conditions.

Possible topics include: Photonic radar system and implementation into a boat or aircraft, Implementation of a radio link for urban scenarios, implementation of a lidarsystems on a basis of an automotive headlight.

Tasks

  • Fully understand the functionality of the entire system
  • Schematic design of a core component
  • Characterization of all important performance metrics
  • Connection with other subcomponents to build the entire system
  • Test under real condition

Organization

The project is divided into 8 segments:

  • Microseminar (independend selfstudy into a scientific topic + presentation)
  • Circuit design and simulation
  • Schematic Review Meeting (Presentation)
  • Layouting of the system
  • Layout Review Meeting (Presentation)
  • Implementation and test under laboratory conditions
  • Test under real condition
  • Final presentation + report

If enough students apply, the students start with solving their own individual tasks, followed by a combination of all individual designs to create a full system.

Requirements

Participation in one of the following lecture courses is considered mandatory for participation in this project:

  • „Schaltungstechnik“ from „Bachelor Electrical Engineering“ program of Paderborn University.

or

  • "Circuit and System Design“ from „Electrical Systems Engineering“ or “Computer Engineering” programs of Paderborn University.

and

  • At least one additional course from Prof Thiede or Prof Scheytt.

Additionally, a successfully finished microseminar is mandatory (the microseminar is taking place in the beginning of the project after registration in PAUL).
