There are many approaches to designing sustainable products. It is not easy to determine which one is the right one during product planning. This is where the it's OWL project "Sustainable Lifecycle Engineering" (SLE) comes in. It supports developers and product managers in taking sustainability aspects into account at an early stage of engineering.
As part of SLE, members of our "Advanced Systems Engineering" workgroup develop methods based on model-based systems engineering (MBSE). MBSE makes it possible to depict complex systems as digital models in order to test functions, recognise risks at an early stage and make better decisions. For example, sensor technology, interactions with other products or safety-relevant requirements can be simulated.
The project is specifically expanding MBSE to include the identification and design of sustainability aspects, model-based decision support and sustainable data management along the entire product life cycle. This enables developers to make decisions at an early stage that make the path from raw material extraction to recycling more sustainable.
