Philosophy and ethics of technology in teaching
Classics and case studies in philosophy and the ethics of technology are the focus of teaching, which is incorporated into both the dual Bachelor's degree programme and the Master's degree programme in the Faculty of Cultural Studies, as well as into the Philosophy teaching programmes for various types of schools. The courses are also open to all faculties, particularly via the minor in Philosophy for the Bachelor's degree programmes in Computer Science and Mathematics and via the Studium generale. It is crucial for students to develop a critical view of sources, as a wide variety of actors with diverse expertise and motives write and speak about combat drones, social bots, algorithmic decision-making systems and genetically modified organisms. A further challenge is to relate theoretically well thought-out ethical positions and arguments to the respective case studies.

Information for students
Dear students,
This FAQ - also known as Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - is intended to help you find your way around studying Philosophy at Paderborn University. Please note that some of these questions have been adapted for courses taught by Dr Alpsancar and do not necessarily apply to other lecturers.
Nevertheless, at the end you will find the most common questions, as well as useful links that may help you outside the Department of Philosophy! We wish you every success in your further studies!
FAQ
How do I register for a course/examination?
You register via the Paderborn University and Teaching Assistance System (PAUL). Log in, click on the tab Study and Examination administration; there you will find the examination registration.
To register a term paper or thesis, please complete the template for the preliminary discussion of term papers or Bachelor's and Master's theses and send it by e-mail when you register for a consultation hour to discuss your work.
How do I register for a course at a later date?
Within the first few weeks, a list will be passed on to you in which you can enter your name and matriculation number. You should therefore be present at the start of the semester, even if you have not officially registered. If there are enough places available, you can move up.
How do I find my examination regulations?
Please refer to the following link:
kw.uni-paderborn.de/studium/pruefungsordnungen
I have questions about/problems with PAUL - who should I contact?

kw.uni-paderborn.de/studium/studienbuero-kw
How do I find the seminar room?
The seminar room is always indicated in PAUL; you can also use the PAUL app to be more flexible. For orientation on campus, please take a look at the site plan or simply ask fellow students on site: https://www.uni-paderborn.de/en/university/how-to-get-here-campus-map
What do I have to consider when submitting my application?
Make sure that all personal data (name, matriculation number, etc.) is present and clearly legible. Also check that your submission is complete in terms of content as well as other documents, such as a mock thesis or declaration of independence.
Where do I hand in the work?
Dr Alpsancar will usually explain the submission modalities at the beginning of the semester. However, you can also hand in essays, protocols or term papers in printed form to Karina Kuppe (N2.113) or in the Philosophy mailbox (near room N3.101).
When will I receive my performance/grade?
Grades are usually entered in PAUL at the end of the current or beginning of the new semester.
I need a certificate - where can I get one?

How do I cite correctly?
Find out about the different citation styles and, in the best case, which one is suitable for your subject area or your academic work. Otherwise, we can also recommend the handout, especially the section on citations and application.

If you are having problems with the content, a discussion with your teacher is usually very helpful. For more technical questions, we are also happy to refer you to the Writing Competence Centre: https://www.uni-paderborn.de/en/university/kompetenzzentrum-schreiben
Where can I find guidelines and formalities?
Formalities for protocols and the like can usually be found in the PANDA course. You can find specifications regarding expected performance in your examination regulations. For templates and tips on writing a paper, we again recommend the handout.
