The HNI Forum took place on Thursday, May 2, 2024, under the topic “Pragmatic opacity of machines from a techno-philosophical and ethical perspective”. The central topic was the opacity of AI and the problems it can entail. The guest speaker from TU Darmstadt was Prof. Dr. Andreas Kaminski, who addressed the distinction between pragmatic and epistemic opacity in his lecture. Suzana Alpsancar, Junior Professor of Applied Ethics at the University of Paderborn, followed on from Kaminski's speech by explaining the ethical discussion surrounding opaque ML systems and how to react to pragmatic opacity from an ethical point of view..
