Summary of the thesis:
Work processes in production environments will change dramatically as a result of artificial intelligence (AI). AI increases the ability of technical systems to assume agency. The resulting changes in human–AI interaction promise both great potential and substantial design requirements. Currently, there is a lack of a human-centered perspective on AI applications; companies struggle to orient themselves regarding the design and impacts of AI given the many possible applications, and suitable management approaches that take into account both technological innovations and work-design concepts are missing.
Against this background, this paper describes an approach for the design of AI-supported work processes in production. It consists of a structuring framework, a procedural (implementation) model, and supporting tools. The structuring framework is used to analyze AI-supported work processes and serves as the basis for the other components of the system, in order to identify and classify relevant use cases. The procedural model enables the planning of a strategic program and provides companies with concrete, sequential steps for designing AI-supported work processes in production. Accompanying the procedural model, tools are provided for each step, including a maturity model and aids for human-centered design.
