As part of the "TalksHoch3" lecture series, the lecture "Heinz Nixdorf and the evolution of information technology: transformation of a region" will be held on 8 October 2025 at 7 p.m. in the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum.
The evening will be opened by Dominik Hermelingmeier and his presentation of the science slam contribution "How a street bollard explains Heinz Nixdorf's technology". This will be followed by Prof Dr Nikolaus Risch's lecture on "Heinz Nixdorf and the evolution of information technology: transformation of a region". Heinz Nixdorf discovered the leading electronic calculating machines as a student in Frankfurt am Main. He met his later mentor Walter Sprick there and realised that there was a new technology using electric tubes to make computer systems smaller, lighter and cheaper. This idea led to the founding of Nixdorf Computer AG, which became a global corporation. It was not only computing power that became the key to technical success, but in particular Nixdorf's ideas and investments in memory capacity, long-term storage capability and custom-designed software. Using various examples, the lecture will show how Heinz Nixdorf's visions and deeds have developed into the basis for the transformation of the rural, industrialised region of Paderborn to this day.
Afterwards there will be an invitation to a drink.
