Lisa Petzke, a research assistant in our “Advanced Systems Engineering” workgroup, attended the Norddesign 2026 conference in Tampere, Finland, from 11–14 August. As a co-author, she presented the paper “Simulation-Based Decision Support Tool for the Economic Evaluation of Circular Business Models”, which was authored by Anja Rasor, Lisa Petzke, Rik Rasor, Christian Koldewey and Roman Dumitrescu.
The paper presents a simulation-based decision support tool that enables companies to carry out economic evaluations of circular business models even in early development phases, despite high levels of uncertainty. To this end, information from a Circular Business Model Canvas is transferred into a simulation model using AI, and static and dynamic Monte Carlo simulations are employed to transparently illustrate uncertainties and their impact on key financial indicators. The result is a financial plan that forms part of a business plan for circular products. Evaluation with industry representatives shows that the approach developed is perceived as comprehensible, user-friendly, practical to use and, in particular, useful for early-stage economic decision-making processes.
