On June 25, the Heinz Nixdorf Institute welcomed numerous new research staff members as part of its annual “Get to Know HNI” event. The event offers newcomers the opportunity to get to know the institute, its workgroups, and their research focuses, as well as to establish early connections that foster interdisciplinary collaboration.

The day began with an official welcome by the Chairman of the Board, Prof. René Fahr. Following this, professors and researchers from the individual workgroups presented their research focuses and provided exciting insights into their current work. In the afternoon, participants could choose from various workshops that addressed the workgroups current projects and topics. For example, the “Advanced Systems Engineering” workgroup presented the use of artificial intelligence in systems engineering; the “Circuit Technology” workgroup provided insights into its laboratory; and the “Product Creation” workgroup introduced disassembly and reassembly as a precursor to circular product development. During a guided tour on the topic of “Applied Ethics—Engineering Ethics,” ethical and philosophical questions were discussed using exhibits. This gave the new employees a comprehensive insight into the institute’s research and diverse areas of work.

The day concluded with the traditional barbecue on the lawn behind our building. In addition to providing an opportunity to chat and make new connections in a relaxed atmosphere, this year’s team event was a big hit. Working in mixed teams, the participants each built an XXL marble run. The challenge required creativity, communication, and close coordination, as the winning team was the one whose marble rolled the farthest. The team activity provided an ideal opportunity to collaborate across departments and strengthen team spirit in a playful way.

Followed by a barbecue buffet and many interesting conversations, the day marked a successful start for the new colleagues and served as a wonderful example of the camaraderie that defines our institute.
