Understanding Fuzzing Internals
Are you a fuzzing practitioner? We need your help!
We are a group of researchers from the Secure Software Engineering lab at Paderborn University, working on understanding Fuzzing using visualizations based off of its internal mechanisms. We are working with Fuzzing Internals, a tool that provides multiple synchronized visualizations (graphs) that aim at helping fuzzing practitioners in understanding fuzzing.
We are conducting a user study in April and May 2026 to assess the usability of our tool. If you are a fuzzing practitioner or know of someone, join us for the user study and help shape the future of fuzzing developments! Participation is voluntary. Participants can withdraw at any time.
Information about the user study
- We estimate that the entire study will take approximately take 45 minutes to 60 minutes of your valuable time.
- We will conduct the study on Zoom, no camera required.
- In the study,
- Participants will complete initial background and state-of-the-art questionnaire.
- We will assign some fuzzing-specific tasks and ask follow-up questions about our tool.
- After completing the tasks, participants will complete a final questionnaire.
The user study design was approved by the Ethics committee of Paderborn University.
Data Collection and Processing
We will collect the following data: fuzzing background information, tool-specific answers through a questionnaire, and name and email address for communication. We would like to screen and audio record the study after you consent to it. The recording will help us create transcriptions to analyze the data systematically after the study. Here is how we will handle your data and transcripts:
- Any other personal data will not be collected as part of the study.
- All collected data is considered strictly confidential and will be anonymized as soon as possible in the research process.
- Since participant names will not be recorded, codes such as P01, P02, etc. will be used to report the results.
- Results of the study may be published, but no identifying information will be included in the publications.
- Only the data controller will have access to the data.
- The recording of the study will be destroyed after we create the anonymized transcripts and conclude the study results.
- Participants will sign a suitable consent form before the user study is conducted.
