Short description

Nowadays complex digital circuits with a few hundred thousand of transistors (e.g. microcontrollers) up to several billions of transistors (e.g. graphic processors) can be found in nearly every technical device. They are called VLSI-Circuits (VLSI = abbr. for Very-Large-Scale Integrated Circuit). The lecture deals with the fundamentals of design and test of complex integrated digital circuits on the basis of modern semiconductor technologies and design methods.

The lecture takes place for the first time in WS 2016/2017  for the first time and replaces the lecture Design of Microelectronic Systems.


Topics of the lecture are:

  • VLSI design methodology and ASIC design styles
  • CMOS technology, CMOS logic gates, design and time-domain behavior of CMOS gates
  • On-chip wiring and its influence on the time-domain behavior of CMOS gates
  • Sequential design
  • Power dissipation and power reduction
  • Clock system and IO circuits
  • Design for test

In the exercises the two most important design styles for VLSI circuits are practised  On one hand this pertains to the design of digital circuits using field-programmable gate-arrays (FPGAs). On the other hand an exemplary design of a digital circuit using standard-cell design methodology is carried out which is the typical design methodology for complex digital circuits in high volume applications. The exercise is carried out with chip design software from Xilinx and Cadence Design System which is also used by electronic design companies.
