Priority Projects in Research

Interdisciplinary cooperation is of central significance for research activities at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute. Through the common efforts of computer scientists, engineers and economists, we are convinced that we can make an important interdisciplinary contribution to the solution of complex problems. Research projects spanning multiple disciplines therefore have particular importance at the Institute.

  • The objective of this Collaborative Research Center 901 "On-The-Fly Computing", headed by the Heinz Nixdorf Institute, is to develop methods for automatic On-The-Fly (OTF) configuration and the pro-vision of individual IT services out of base services that are available on worldwide markets. In addition to the configuration by special OTF service providers and the provision of services known as OTF Compute Centres, this involves developing methods for quality assurance, security, interaction and market developments.
  • The research project AI Marketplace, headed by the Heinz Nixdorf Institute, has been working on a digital marketplace for artificial intelligence (AI) in product creation. The result is an innovation ecosystem that brings together users, providers and experts of AI to strengthen the innovative power of German companies.
  • The Heinz Nixdorf Institute has been represented by two research colleges in the current funding programme of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia “Forschungskolleg NRW”. One of them examines the effects of “Industrie 4.0” on the world of work. The second one researches hybrid lightweight construction technologies that will enable lightweight, efficient and mobile applications.
  • In the priority programme “Integrated electronic-photonic systems for ultra-wideband signal processing” (SPP2111), 17 research groups from Germany are investigating new electronic-photonic systems based on silicon photonics technology. The priority programme is funded by the DFG and coordinated by Professor Christoph Scheytt.
