“Wissenschaftscafé 2018” - Applying Lightweight Construction

On July 10th, the “Wissenschaftscafé 2018” of NRW Fortschrittskolleg "Light, efficient, mobile" took place for the second time. This event is about the exchange of knowledge and experience on the subject of lightweight construction between scientists and pupils from Paderborn (Gymnasium Theodorianum, Richard-von-Weizäcker-Berufskolleg).

Xiaojun Yang of the research group Product Creation worked as a co-organizer and offered a practical workshop on the subject of "Light bridge construction based on design methods". The subjects of lightweight construction and design process were thus brought closer to the pupils by a concrete application.

Third meeting of the BMBF project "OptiAMix" in Landsberg am Lech

On June 25th and 26th, 2018 partners of the BMBF research project "OptiAMix" met at Hirschvogel Tech Solutions in Landsberg am Lech for their third meeting. Christian Oleff and Philipp Scholle from the research group Product Creation convinced the OptiAMix industrial partners with their software tool, which will help to identify critical requirements in the product design of additively manufactured components. Expert exchange on research for civil security

The Innovation Forum Civil Security of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is the central event regarding German security research. Dr.-Ing. Jens Pottebaum presented the innovative approaches of the research group Product Creation as part of a poster session. As a coordinator of several projects which Pottebaum initiated since 2007 in security research, he discussed current research topics in this established network of actors from science, industry, government agencies and organizations with security tasks (BOS). A challenge in the program, whose continuation was announced during the event in Berlin, remains the transfer of innovations into the application. The research group Product Creation therefore develops e.g. in the current EU innovation project ANYWHERE methods and tools to support the sustainability of research results.

IEM project seminar - develop methodically successful concepts

This semester, our popular course "IEM Project Seminar" was conducted in cooperation with the company Egger. Egger is a globally operating manufacturer of wood-based materials e.g. for the furniture industry and craft. The task was to identify solutions for the tracking of products and was supervised by the scientists Philipp Scholle, Henrik Thiele and Patrick Taplick. Two student teams met the challenge and developed innovative and workable solutions in one week. In a final presentation, the students presented their solutions to the Head of SAP Competence Center SCM, Silvia Fien, and her team.

At the end of the presentations, Silvia Fien as client and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Iris Gräßler drew a positive conclusion. "The results exceeded my expectations," said Silvia Fien. Product Creation at the Paris Sorbonne University

At the 13th IEEE System of Systems Engineering Conference (June, 19th until 22nd) in Paris, Julian Hentze from the research group Product Creation presented results from research in Systems Engineering Education. The paper "Systems Engineering competencies in academic education - An industrial survey about skills in Systems Engineering" shows the competences that academic graduates should have from the point of view of industrial actors in Systems Engineering. These findings are used as a basis for the revision of the own course "Systems Engineering".

Product Creation at the Kongsberg Systems Engineering Event (KSEE)

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Iris Gräßler and Julian Hentze from the research group Product Creation visited KSEE in Kongsberg, Norway on June 14th and 15th, 2018. Besides a meeting of the European partners from Enschede (Dr. Ir. G. Maarten Bonnema, right in the picture) and Kongsberg (Prof. Dr. Gerrit Muller, left in the picture), there was an intensive exchange of experiences and various international lectures on "Systems Engineering in the Digital Era "(more info at The focus was on machine learning and big data.

V-Model validated at the 15th International DESIGN Conference

From the point of the VDI activities on the V-Model, the DESIGN Conference 2018 started with a highlight: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Iris Gräßler and Dr.-Ing. Michael Dattner from the company BST eltromat International from Bielefeld were able to co-design the start of the conference and led the workshop "Validate the V-Model for new VDI 2206". Together with Mr. Hentze (Research group Product Creation) and Mr. Schneider (Institute for Mechatronic Systems in Mechanical Engineering, TU Darmstadt), they represented the VDI Committee of Experts 4.10 "Interdisciplinary Product Design". Under the chairmanship of Prof. Gräßler, the VDI GMA Society for Measurement and Automation Technology has set itself the goal of adapting the VDI Guideline 2206 and its core element, the V-Model, to current and future requirements in industrial applications.

In the workshop, international product design experts were actively involved in the revision of the V-Model VDI 2206 guideline. In an "open space" concept, participants were given the opportunity to formulate, edit and evaluate theses in addition to the prepared content. For example, changes of the future guideline have been reviewed and evaluated compared to the original 2004 version. In open and intensive discussions, the participants confirmed the work of the expert committee and gave impulses for the further development of the guideline. The DESIGN Conference is the central conference of the DESIGN Society, in which scientific findings from the field of product design are presented and discussed internationally.

ANYWHERE platform for R & D available online

Some companies and public institutions are already using results from our project ANYWHERE for both contract development and internal research and development. By using the available data, new solutions can be explored. An example is the application for the Catalan civil protection, which is implemented and evaluated in the project as a case study (see picture).

The so-called "Multi Hazard Early Warning System (MH-EWS)" - integrates around 200 meteorological forecasting instruments and is the core of the ANYWHERE system. It is now online and can be tested and integrated free of charge during the project period. License models for the period after the project are in preparation. The integration of one or more products is easy to handle and can be carried out in shortest time on a common GIS visualizer. The forecasting algorithms and products provide an overview of which products are included in the project. Recently, a detailed integration manual has been published that provides detailed information about the project to prospective clients.

In the project, the research group Product Creation undertakes the research on product and service innovations which base on ANYHERE and can be used in e.g. driver assistance systems.

The next big workshop will take place on November 14th and 15th 2018 in Barcelona. About 300 participants from civil society, science and industry from all over Europe as well as representatives of the European Commission are expected to attend.

12th International Symposium on Tools and Methods of Competitive Engineering (TMCE 2018): Prof. Gräßler sets a prelude impulse

Professor Iris Gräßler received a great resonance with her keynote "Competitive Engineering in the age of Industry 4.0 and beyond" at the renowned international conference TMCE 2018. It showed how intelligent technical systems have to be developed and put into practice in today's world. She emphasized the characteristics of the VUCA world: Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. She lets more than 100 participants share her research results and implementation experience in industrial practice. She pointed out that a crucial aspect is that the work results always reflect the business interests.

The TMCE is regarded in professional circles as a trendsetter in basic research in the field of product design. The results of the previous twelve events were published in 37 special issues of scientific journals.

Doctoral colloquium 2018 of the NRW-Fortschrittskolleg "Light, efficient, mobile"

On March 8th, the PhD student colloquium 2018 of the Fortschrittskolleg "Light, efficient, mobile" took place at Paderborn University. The NRW Fortschrittskolleg deals with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary issues related to lightweight construction with hybrid systems. The doctoral colloquium serves the colleagues to present their research aims, the respective procedure and the status of their dissertations and to network with the participating professors and doctoral students.

After a brief introduction by Professor Tröster, all research topics were presented by the doctoral students in four sessions on various topics. Xiaojun Yang, research associate at the research group Product Creation of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute, is aiming for an improved "decision-making process for the design of product complexity based on modular lightweight construction". She presented her approach for discussion, which brings together technological lightweight potentials and economic aspects of product and process structuring.

ANYWHERE" project meeting in Spiez

From March 7th to 9th, 2018, the partners of the EU research project ANYWHERE met in Spiez (Switzerland) for the third project meeting. Project-relevant results were presented, progress was discussed and further activities were planned. The focus of work package 5, which was coordinated by Dr.-Ing. Jens Pottebaum is based on four case studies and methods to increase the innovation of products to increase the self-protection of the population and companies. The research group Product Creation brings expertise in the field of scenario technique and improves this method for use in the domain.

In a workshop with partners, further application potentials of the algorithms developed in the project for the prognosis and impact analysis of extreme weather conditions were identified. These will be integrated into a common platform. In a further step, results of the four case studies (protection of campsites in Catalonia, safety of schools in Genoa, increasing the security of supply of a Finnish energy supplier and increasing the resilience of logistics chains) were presented and discussed.

The ANYWHERE project is developing an integrated system to improve weather-related disaster resilience. In preparing and responding to threats, people and organizations should be able to anticipate and minimize potential impacts, including in the interests of business continuity. ANYWHERE involves 32 partners from all over Europe. The volume amounts to around 14 million euros.

Jens Pottebaum koordiniert wird, liegt auf vier Fallstudien und Methoden zur Steigerung der Innovation von Produkten zur Steigerung des Selbstschutzes von Bevölkerung und Unternehmen. Die Fachgruppe Produktentstehung bringt hier unter anderem Expertise im Bereich der Szenario-Technik ein und entwickelt diese Methode für den Einsatz in der Domäne weiter.

The research group Product Creation from a different perspective - Chili Event 2018

Those who wanted to get to know the research group Product Creation and their research topics had the opportunity to do so on January 30th, 2018. For the first time, the research group invited to the "Chili Event" at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute. In a relaxed atmosphere, interested students immersed themselves with doctoral students in the various research topics of the Product Creation field of action. On the basis of poster and demonstrator presentations, they were able to form their own image of strategic planning, innovation management, development management and Systems Engineering, Digital & Virtual Engineering and production management. Attractions were the demonstrators: On the one hand the decentralized control of production and logistics systems in the Smart Automation Lab, on the other hand virtual environments to increase creativity through virtual reality technology.

Strengthened by chili and cold drinks, lively discussions arose between students, academic staff and Professor Iris Gräßler.

IEM project seminar - how do I proceed methodically and develop a promising concept

One course that is particularly popular among students is the IEM project seminar. Within the scope of project seminars, students work on current topics of interested industrial companies and have the opportunity to present their solutions to the executives of the companies.

In the winter semester 2017/2018, the scientifics Philipp Scholle, Henrik Thiele and Patrick Taplick worked with the company BST eltromat International GmbH in order to find a solution for alternative variably adjustable lenses for camera systems for web inspection. BST eltromat is a leading manufacturer of quality assurance solutions for web processing industries.

Two student teams have met this challenge and developed innovative and workable solutions in one week. In a final presentation, the students presented their solutions and made this Dr. Dattner, innovation manager BST eltromat, tasty.

At the end of the presentations Dr. Michael Dattner as client, as well as Prof. Dr.-Ing. Iris Gräßler drew a positive conclusion. The concepts created will be reviewed in the coming weeks at BST eltromat for their implementation.

"ANYWHERE" Working Meeting in Grenoble

On January 24th, 2018, the partners of the EU research project ANYWHERE met at the University of Grenoble to present and share project-relevant results. The core topic of the meeting in the city in the southeast of France was the work package 5 "Innovation to increase the self-protection of population and companies". Philipp Scholle is involved in ANYWHERE and brings in his expertise in the area of scenario technique and validated by practical application.

Chili @ HNI-PE: Product Creation invites students to get to know each other

The research group Product Creation invites students of technical disciplines to get to know each other to the foyer of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute on January 30th, 2018 at 5 pm. In addition to professional exchange, getting to know the employees and individual perspectives in and after their studies should not be neglected. In a relaxed atmosphere, guests are invited to cold drinks and fiery chili.

Focused set aims

Far away from day-to-day business, the scientists of the chair Product Creation have strategically aligned themselves for the future at the self-managed Turfhoeke in Gorredijk, the Netherlands, from January 14th to 19th, 2018. Based on a self-assessment of the mission statements, the research profile was sharpened and it was determined how basic research will be strengthened and further developed. In this context, Philipp Scholle takes on the position of the second senior engineer and will lead the fortunes in the fields of innovation and development management. In close integration with these scientific topics, e-learning approaches have been integrated into academic teaching.

To unlock the spirit of systematic structured engineering, innovative creativity and innovation methods such as open space, agile approaches, mandala, inspirational sand paintings, and LUCULLUS-Do-it-yourself have been used.

Like this, the team around Prof. Gräßler returns motivated and with fresh ideas in the daily business.

Meeting of the VDI Technical Committee 4.10

On September 22nd, the technical committee meeting of the VDI / VDE-GMA FA 4.10 "Interdisciplinary product development" took place in Harsewinkel. Following the invitation of CLAAS KGaA, the members of the expert committee were able to take a look at the product exhibition and production at Harsewinkel. CLAAS participates actively in the technical committee and thus in the new edition of VDI guideline 2206 "Development methodology for mechatronic systems".

Best Paper Award for researchers of the research group Product Creation

For the contribution at the "1st International Science Fiction Prototyping Conference" Prof. Gräßler, Patrick Taplick and Dr.-Ing. Jens Pottebaum from Product Creation of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute received the Best Paper Award. The conference took place from April 10th to 12th 2017 in Bruges.

The conference deals with technological trends and futuristic applications. In this context, this year's focus was on the use of virtual and augmented reality technology. Furthermore, topics such as humanitarian drone missions and the use of 3D scanning technology in industrial practice were present at the conference. It was first hosted by the EUROSIS - The European Multidisciplinary Society for Modeling and Simulation Technology.

The awarded paper has the title "Enhancing Innovation Processes by Disruptive Technologies". "We try to support innovation processes through virtual reality applications. In virtual space, for example, we have new opportunities to set impulses for creative thinking," Patrick Taplick explains the basic idea.

“VDI Mechatronik 2019” - Germany's largest conference on mechatronics hosted at Paderborn University

On March 27th and 28th, 2019, the largest mechatronics conference of German-speaking countries will be hosted at Heinz Nixdorf Institute of Paderborn University. As announced, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Iris Gräßler, head of the research group Product Creation, the VDI (Association of German Engineers) in cooperation with colleagues from RWTH Aachen, TU Dortmund and TU Dresden, bringing the conference to Paderborn for the first time.

Mechatronics deals interdisciplinarily with the interaction of mechanics, electrics/electronics and information technology. At the mechatronics conference, which has been held every two years since 2001, the latest research results are presented and discussed. "The conference offers an excellent platform for the exchange between industry and science," says Gräßler, adding: "Paderborn has contributed significantly to the origins of mechatronics, among other universities. In addition, a number of companies have settled around the university which have advanced the mechatronics ". Therefore, Paderborn stands today for the particularly close integration of industry and research in the field of mechatronics, according to the professor. This also benefited the development of the university.

As head of the research group Product Creation at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute in Paderborn, Gräßler as chairman of the VDI expert committee 4.10 "Interdisciplinary product development" brings her findings in the discussion. Here, the changes towards an intelligent, networked approach to product development are being driven forward that among other things will be incorporated in the revision of VDI guideline 2206 "Development Methodology for Mechatronic Systems".
