We congratulate Thomas Schierbaum to his doctorate

Thomas Schierbaum has successfully passed his doctoral examination. He received his doctorate for the topic "Systematik zur Kostenbewertung im Systementwurf mechatronischer Systeme in der Technologie Molded Interconnect Devices (MID)" under Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Gausemeier.

High density of functions at small space which goes along with miniaturization are success factors for a multiplicity of mechatronic products. One innovative technology in this field is MID (Molded Interconnect Devices). The technology enables integration of electronic parts into mechanical parts. Printed Circuit Boards can be substituted. This leads to a reduction of needed space, parts and costs. Especially cost estimation is often a difficult hurdle when it comes to highly innovative MID-Projects. Right cost estimation was identified as a main key factor in the MID-Studies 2011 [FGG+11]. This statement is underlined in practice.

Therefore a systematic for early cost estimation of mechatronic systems in the technology MID was developed. It consists of four elements: a detailed process model, a comprehensive cost model, a modelling language to describe relevant aspects of the product and production system as well as a concept for the computer aided application.

The systematic is validated by two application examples: miniature robot BeBot, which was developed at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute and an interior lighting for vehicles.
