Education in Dialogue

Regional Forum for Education in Ostwestfalen-Lippe

The development of the educational forum bid-owl is based on results and experiences made in the project Bildungswege in der InformationsGesellschaft (BIG) where schools within the city of Paderborn had the opportunity to enhance their work by using a content management system. The forum bid-owl now provides a modern tool tailored to the specific needs of every-day teaching and learning in schools. It may be used by anyone involved in educational processes to cooperate and communicate through networks.

Bid-owl allows schools, extracurricular partners, and other educational actors in Ostwestfalen-Lippe to work cooperatively and provide the results of their work specifically for certain groups of users or for the public. Special tools support the efficient production, communication, and discussion within small working groups. Results may at any time be published by just a few mouse-clicks.

Schools thus have a tool at their disposal for developing a server based knowledge management in the Internet, allowing for a differentiated access by teachers, school classes, and other user groups. All functions can be accessed through a comprehensible and easy-to-use web-based interface with a standard web browser. Hence, any computer with Internet access is turned into an access point to the school's knowledge management.

The platform is designed as a pool of servers. Currently, three servers are being employed with different focus. The central server is primarily used for managing inter-school projects and the cooperation of teachers who exchange teaching materials or are involved in working groups on certain topics with colleagues from different schools. This server is also used in teacher training, where activities may be coordinated and material exchanged.

While on the central server every school has only a limited number of pupil's accounts, a second server provides access for every teacher and every pupil in G├╝tersloh. There curricular projects of any kind may be realised. On a third server prototypical structures for network supported work in schools are being developed in a cooperation with the Bertelsmann Foundation and the project Lernstatt Paderborn.

In addition to providing the working platform, courses on the system's usage and on how to effectively and efficiently use it in teaching and learning in schools are held on a regular basis. These courses are offered in a cooperation with the Bezirksregierung Detmold within the
