Rail Cab System

In relation to the overall technological progress of the past 150 years, not much has changed in the principle of propulsion by power being transmitted in the contact between wheels and track. The main functions of supporting, guiding, and driving are effected exclusively via the contact surface between the wheels and the track which is no more than the size of a 2-Euro coin. After a long period of partial improvements this principle has reached its limits: a significant increase in benefit to the customer would require a disproportionate investment in R & D. The time has come to look for new solutions that make the most of the fascinating potential of new technologies and result in a far better cost-benefit ratio.

The Concept: A Modular Railway System

Our proposal is a moduler railway system that combines modern chassis technology with an up-to-date propulsion by wear-free linear motors while using existing railway lines and rail infrastructure. In this way a serious impediment to a widespread use of this new, rail-bound transport system can be removed.

An important element of the new traffic system are small, driverless vehicles that can transport goods and passengers on demand, without any stops or changes of train. Intelligent chassis technology provides substantially higher ride comfort than ever. Consistent interaction between information technology, sensors, and actuators makes this entirely new mechatronic “railway” system possible.

The small and flexible vehicles can be produced at a low cost because already available manufacturing technologies are applied. With them it will be possible to operate freight and passenger transport in an efficient, automated way. This will open new perspectives for the railway of tomorrow which will be a real alternative to competing transport systems but also a vital part of integrated public transportation systems.
