Adaptive Virtual Chemistry Laboratory for Study Preparation

Objective of the project group

The project group aims to develop a virtual learning platform for chemical-technical education using virtual reality technology. It represents a supplementary offer for students to prepare for internships in chemical laboratories. Overarching goal is the integration of digital collaboration formats in teaching and studying.

Use case "laboratory" in the technical environment

Students are to carry out an experiment in a virtual laboratory according to the instructions in their teaching materials. To do this, they enter the virtual lab with the VR headset. They interact with the 3D world with the help of two controllers that they have on their hands. With these, they can grasp and operate objects in the 3D world. For an experiment, they take the necessary devices out of cupboards, place them on the virtual work table and prepare their use. Materials are processed virtually with the devices, and experimental trials can be carried out in the virtual world.

The student also receives assistance or instructions on how to conduct the experiment correctly from the VR system. Accordingly, the VR system can react interactively to the student’s actions.

A virtual experiment can be carried out by several students or lecturers in the room. Persons meet in the 3D room, see each other as avatars and communicate with each other. Interesting aspect here is that people acting in the virtual lab can be in different locations in the real world.

This is also about designing new mobility patterns (virtual and mixed mobility) and improving digital and intercultural skills.

Example of a use case

  • Grasp beaker
  • Open water tap
  • Let water run into beaker
  • Go to the scale
  • Weigh water
  • Put water on magnetic stirrer
  • Take second beaker
  • Fill sodium cube into beaker with spoon
  • Weigh sodium on scale
  • Take sodium to magnetic stirrer and put it into water glass
  • Place thermometer in water
  • Adjust the speed of the magnetic stirrer
  • Observe temperature rise
