Abstract

This paper presents a design space exploration of scalar multiplication used for elliptic curve cryptography. A holistic methodology for the automated evaluation of instruction set extensions and dedicated hardware accelerators is presented. We use a dual design-flow, consisting of the automatic generation of a complete C-compiler tool chain and the evaluation of the resource efficiency of the developed hardware. Several instruction set extensions and two dedicated hardware accelerators are implemented for a 4-issue VLIW processor and mapped to a state of the art 65nm low power standard cell technology. By use of hardware extensions, scalar multiplication is sped by a factor of 29. The performance improvement is analyzed with respect to the hardware costs in terms of chip area and power consumption.
