Abstract

An important function of automatic teller machines (ATM) is to draw off single banknotes from a pile. This process has to be reliable even under difficult circumstances, e.g., if heavily used banknotes are involved. Even today, the development of such machines requires a large number of prototypes and test runs because in the modelling process, separation and transportation of the banknotes are difficult to handle. Furthermore, the draw-off and the separation processes are simply open-loop-controlled so that changes in the behaviour of rolls and paper impact the whole process. In the course of this paper it will be shown how the separation process can be modelled and analysed with the help of mechatronic design – consisting of modelling, the view on the entire system and the usage of feedback control. On the basis of these model analysis it will be demonstrated how the system can be inproved using automatic control.
